School events bring learning to life and help shape our school culture. They help students build confidence, connect with others and celebrate their progress. Events also give families a chance to be involved in school life and share in their child’s achievements.
The Open Boys team travelled to Speers Point on the March 26 and defeated Merewether HS 2 goals to 1 and then Lambton HS 5/3 on penalties after the game was nil all at full time. These wins progressed GLC to the Hunter semi final against Whitebridge HS, which they won 4/0. Into the Hunter final against Callaghan Combined College – super tough and competitive game, 1 all with 90 seconds remaining before a potential penalty shootout, CCC scored to win the match. The GLC boys played with immense skill and sportsmanship throughout the final and the competition as a whole, knocking out three powerhouses of Hunter School Football.

Year 12 Hospitality - Pasta Masterclass in the Hunter Valley
Yr 12 Hospitality students had the opportunity to participate in a pasta masterclass at “Our Italian Table” in the Hunter Valley. The class was run by the wonderful Jen Nicita at her Tuscan inspired homestead.
On the day students learnt the fundamentals of pasta making and cooking as well as suitable sauces. They made two types of handmade egg pasta, a garganelli and a fettucine. Students also made a Pomodoro sugo and a Scacce which is an Italian stuffed bread.
After all that hard work students indulged in a long table lunch of their creations. The garganelli was served with a broccoli, lemon and chilli sauce and the fettucine was served with a spiced pork sausage ragu. Students finished their meal with assorted biscotti.
Year 11 Marine Students Visit to Taronga Zoo
Taronga Zoo scientists Dr Jo Day and Dr Phoebe Meagher have been researching marine turtles in NSW. The turtles will have satellite tracking devices attached to provide insight into where the turtles we see in our area are spending their time.
Recently an opportunity arose for two Yr 11 Marine Studies students, Summer & Penny, to spend a day assisting with the research and experiencing what a day in the life of a marine scientist is really like, seasickness and all.
During the day, two turtles were tagged, a Green Sea Turtle and a Hawksbill Turtle.
Tracking reveals most turtles remain local, providing strong evidence that NSW is a vital year‑round foraging ground for marine turtles.
Great Lakes College would like to thank the team at Dive Forster Fisherman’s Wharf for facilitating this experience for our students and their continued support of our Marine program.
